Happy Democracy Day To All Nigerians

Democracy Day in Nigeria, May 29, every year.

As most of you probably know, I write this blog from here in Nigeria where I was born, live and also work.

Today is work-free in the country because today is Democracy Day. Except for those on essential duties or are involved in private businesses, most people will have family fun time-out or get-together today to mark the once-a-year holiday.

This Democracy Day commemoration is different from the International Day of Democracy pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly to take place every 15 September around the many countries of the world.

Democracy Day in Nigeria is celebrated every year on 29 May, in honour of the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999 after many years of tortuous military rule.

By October this year, the country will be 57 years as an independent nation. But today, we are recording 18 straight years of democratic governance, without any military intervention like before.

Given the country’s chequered history of multiple military interventions in government, achieving 18 straight years of democratic governance is not a mean fit. And despite our numerous challenges, we give thanks to God for all His mercies over the country and her teeming populace.

Congratulations Nigeria. And happy Democracy Day to all my fellow citizens of Nigeria.

Wherever you are around the world, please join in the celebration. God bless Nigeria. God bless all of us.

Kindly leave a message in the comment box for all my fellow Nigerians.

Victor, thank you for sharing this; I wasn’t aware of this information. Happy Democracy Day to Nigeria and I pray that the Lord will continue to bless your nation with peace and, most of all, His divine presence. Have a great day off, Victor.
