Christmas: The Birth of the Soon-coming King of the World

The meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ – the Saviour of the world. It is the coming of divinity to the Earth. And the birth of Jesus is also the birth of the soon-coming King of the world.

It is a Biblical truth that Jesus will one day rule this world. By that I mean He will be in charge of the government of the world.

Sounds far-fetched?

May be to you. But any disciple of Jesus Christ that’s worth the name knows that this is a beckoning future reality.

The birth of Jesus was His first coming to the Earth. His second coming is still a future event, but it is going to be a sure event.

His first birth by a virgin was foretold and it happened as prophesied. His second-coming which has also been prophesied, will sooner or later take place.

When Jesus first came to the Earth, He came as the Saviour. From eternity He stepped into time to die for the sin of the world.

As divinity that came to earth, He paid the eternal prize for humanity, thereby reconciling mankind with God.

He will come again not as a baby but as a king to rule the world.

While celebrating Christmas, we should not lose sight of the fact that Jesus will come back again to the world – not as a baby, but as a King.

Angels gave the assurance

Before He was born

Before Jesus was even conceived, an Angel had explained to Mary, His would be mum, what kind of authority Jesus would have. Specific reference was made to His enthronement to kingship.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32‭-‬33 NKJV

The first part of this assurance has already been fulfilled: Jesus was born and He became so great that we still talk about Him centuries after He has walked this earth. And we already know Him as the Son of God.

The second part of the prophecy is about a future event: Jesus will be enthroned as the King of the world and “of His kingdom there shall be no end.”

One thing is sure, when Jesus becomes the king of the world, things will no longer be the same again. The world will know the best government ever.

Everyone alive will be subjected to His authority and power.

Before He ascended

At the ascension of Jesus, His disciples received angelic assurances that the same way they saw their Master taken up in the clouds into Heaven is the same way He would come back to the earth.

“Men of Galilee,” said the two Angels who accosted the disciples, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!” Acts 1: 11.

Prophets prophesied it

Isaiah, Paul, others…

Speaking in reference to Jesus as the future ruler of the world, prophet Isaiah told us “the government will be upon His shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6).

In his expository letter to the Corinthians, Paul explained that Jesus will come back again to the world to reign or to rule. By then all human authority and power will be put to an end ( I Corinthians 15:22-27).

Centuries before Jesus was born, prophet Micah also wrote that a ruler will come out of Bethlehem. That small village hasn’t been known to produce great rulers. But from it came Jesus, the greatest ruler that will ever be.

But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,Too little to be among the clans of Judah; From you One shall come forth for Me [who is] to be Ruler in Israel,His goings forth (appearances) are from long ago,From ancient days.” Micah 5:2

So Jesus was born in Bethlehem in fulfilment of that prophecy, but we all know He didn’t go on to become a ruler during His first advent to the Earth. He will become ruler and King during His second-coming. We can bear that in mind while we celebrate His birth.

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world.

In His first coming, Jesus came to redeem mankind and reconcile us to God. Having fulfiled that mission, He ascended to heaven to wait for an appointed time to come back to earth.

Yes, Jesus is coming back to this earth a second time. He will not come as a baby, but as a king to rule the world. By then all human authority and power will be ended.
